DPI, PPI, and Image Resolution for Custom Printing

Short answer: PPI describes the pixels available per printed inch; DPI usually describes how a printer places ink or toner dots. For a 10 × 8 inch image at 300 ppi, prepare about 3000 × 2400 pixels. Always evaluate effective PPI at the final placed size.

Use the pixel-dimension formula

Required pixels equal printed inches multiplied by target pixels per inch. A 12-inch-wide print at 300 ppi needs 3600 pixels across. A 1800-pixel image printed 12 inches wide provides 150 effective ppi.

Choose resolution for the actual process

Three hundred ppi is a useful starting point for close-view, high-detail output, not a universal law. Large signage can use less because it is viewed farther away. Line art and tiny type often benefit from vector geometry. Test the real substrate and RIP before establishing a shop standard.

Avoid artificial upscaling claims

Resampling can create more pixels, but it cannot recover details that were never captured. Evaluate faces, fine type, gradients, and hard edges after any enlargement. Ask for a better original when artifacts remain visible at expected viewing distance.
