How to Measure and Prepare Artwork for Custom Patches

Short answer: Customer artwork rarely arrives at the right size, resolution, or format for patch production. This guide walks through sizing artwork to industry-standard patch dimensions, hitting 300 DPI, and cleaning up backgrounds and transparent areas before production starts.

  1. Collect the customer's artwork

    Ask customers for the highest resolution file they have. Preferred formats in order: SVG, AI, PDF, high-res PNG, high-res JPG. Avoid low-resolution web images from social media; they almost always need to be redrawn.

  2. Check the resolution

    For production, artwork must resolve at 300 DPI at the final patch size. A 3-inch patch needs artwork at least 900 pixels wide. Print Laser Pro flags low-resolution artwork on upload and offers AI upscaling to bring it to production quality.

  3. Pick the final patch dimensions

    Standard patch sizes: 2-inch (left chest, small logo), 3-inch (most common for hat fronts), 3.5-inch (rectangular badges), 4-inch (full-back left), 8 to 12-inch (full-back). Talk to the customer about placement before committing to size.

  4. Resize proportionally

    Scale the artwork to the final dimension, keeping the aspect ratio locked. Do not stretch or skew. If the customer wants a 3-inch circular patch but the artwork is rectangular, crop or add negative space rather than distort.

  5. Clean up the background

What's the minimum image resolution I can use?

Do I always need to remove the background?
For embroidery, patches, and most custom products, yes. The background gets excluded from production and shows as transparent on the final piece. For DTF and UV printing, the alpha channel becomes the white underbase, so a clean transparent background is essential.
What if the artwork has small text?
Text under 3mm tall does not embroider cleanly on standard machines. Either scale the text larger, remove it, or convert to a DTF or UV DTF transfer where small text prints fine. For chenille patches, 6mm minimum text height is a safe floor.
