How to Measure a Tumbler for a Laser Engraving Wrap
Short answer: Measure the actual blank, set a safe artwork band, place the seam, and check your SVG and rotary setup before laser engraving a tumbler.
Step-by-step
Identify the exact blank
Record brand, model, capacity, and supplier SKU. Two cups sold as 20 oz can have different shapes. Check the current supplier decoration area for that SKU.
Measure the usable straight band
Mark the upper shoulder and lower base transition. Measure only the area your laser can decorate consistently, keeping the lid, handle, taper, and chuck contact clear.
Measure circumference at the engraving band
Wrap a flexible tape or narrow paper strip around the cup where the design will run. Measure that strip flat. If the band tapers, measure both its top and bottom and use a test piece to check distortion.
Choose a seam and safe margin
Put the seam away from the most important text or logo. Leave room for placement error and for the visible transition between both ends of a full wrap.
Set the SVG canvas at actual size
Set SVG width to your measured circumference and height to the usable band. Keep the artwork inside your safe margins. Import into laser software at 1:1 scale and verify its dimensions there.
Check the rotary and run a sample
Confirm the machine's rotary settings, focus, origin, material, and direction. Run a small alignment test or one sample cup before producing a batch.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use a generic 20 oz wrap size?
- Use a template as a starting layout only. Measure your exact blank and compare with its supplier specification before engraving.
- Where should the seam go?
- Place it in a less visible area and keep essential artwork away from the join. Check the cup preview and test a real blank.
- Does an SVG control my laser settings?
- No. An SVG carries geometry. Set rotary, focus, power, speed, origin, and layer behavior in your own laser software.
